Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about drug testing.
How long do drugs stay in your system?
Detection times vary by drug type, test method, frequency of use, and individual metabolism. Urine tests typically detect marijuana for 3-30 days, cocaine for 2-4 days, opiates for 2-4 days, and amphetamines for 1-4 days. Hair tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days.
What's the difference between a 5-panel and 10-panel drug test?
A 5-panel test screens for the five most commonly abused drugs: marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, and PCP. A 10-panel test includes these plus benzodiazepines, barbiturates, methadone, propoxyphene, and methaqualone.
Can I refuse a drug test?
You can refuse a drug test, but there may be consequences. For employment, refusal is typically treated the same as a positive result. For court-ordered or probation testing, refusal may result in legal penalties. For medical testing, you have the right to refuse but it may affect your care.
Are drug tests confidential?
Drug test results are confidential and protected by privacy laws. For employment testing, results are shared with the employer's designated representative. Medical testing is protected by HIPAA. Legal/court-ordered testing results are shared with the appropriate legal authorities.
What happens if I fail a drug test?
Consequences depend on the context. For employment, you may be denied a job offer or face termination. For probation, you may face legal consequences. Many employers have Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) that offer support for substance abuse issues.
Can secondhand smoke cause a positive test?
While possible, it's unlikely for secondhand marijuana smoke to cause a positive urine test at standard cutoff levels. However, extreme exposure in unventilated spaces could potentially trigger a positive result. Hair tests are less likely to be affected by secondhand exposure.
Can prescription medications cause a positive result?
Yes, certain prescription medications can cause positive results. For example, some ADHD medications may test positive for amphetamines, and certain pain medications may test positive for opiates. Always disclose prescription medications to the testing facility.
What's a confirmation test?
If an initial screening test is positive, a confirmation test (usually GC-MS or LC-MS/MS) is performed. This more accurate test identifies the specific substance and concentration, virtually eliminating false positives.
How accurate are drug tests?
When properly administered and analyzed at certified laboratories, drug tests are highly accurate. Initial immunoassay screenings have about 95-99% accuracy, while confirmation testing with GC-MS or LC-MS/MS is nearly 100% accurate.
Can you beat a drug test?
Attempting to cheat a drug test is not recommended and often detectable. Labs check for diluted samples, adulterants, and substitution. Many testing procedures include observed collection or temperature checks to prevent tampering. Additionally, cheating on a court-ordered or employment test may have serious legal or professional consequences.
How much does drug testing cost?
Costs vary by test type and location. Urine tests typically cost $30-$100, hair tests $100-$150, saliva tests $20-$60, and blood tests $100-$300. Some employers cover the cost of employment-related testing.
How quickly will I get results?
Most negative results are available within 1-2 business days. Positive results take longer (3-5 days) because they require confirmation testing. Some facilities offer rapid tests with results in minutes, though these may still require lab confirmation for positive results.
